Hi everyone, my name is Hope and I need your help!
I’m a second semester sophomore at Roanoke College studying global business and sociology with a consistent 3.5 GPA. I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland - going to college in Virginia is the furthest I’ve been from home. In High School I received many honors and held many leadership positions while also juggling after-school and weekend jobs. You see, my parents didn’t get the opportunity to go to college - I was born when they were teenagers themselves. So, there were some tough times but I have always stayed focused in pursuing my dreams. As you can imagine, paying for college has been a challenge, but between my summer savings and loans ($35,000 so far), I’ve managed to fund my education to this point. In fact, I was recently honored to be accepted to a special, exclusive program that fits perfectly with my major and life goals … but it’s expensive!
First let me tell you about the course - it’s called Sri Lanka: Landscape and History and involves fourteen students traveling to Sri Lanka for almost a month to study the development of the country’s culture and business. We’ll study the tea trade, the country’s religious diversity and topography and how all of these aspects have impacted Sri Lanka’s growth from antiquity to a modern nation. Since my dream is to work in international business, I’m excited to learn not only about Sri Lanka and the culture, but also to gain experience in looking at all foreign countries from a broad perspective.
This would be my very first trip outside of the US and as my major suggests, I really want to see and experience the world. The tuition is $4,300, which includes travel, housing, course materials, and meals. My Dad took out a loan which will cover some of the cost but I still need $3,500. The money I make from working full-time over summer and holiday breaks at a restaurant and at school as a professor’s assistant is to cover living expenses while at school. Since I already have about $35,000 in school debt, I really can’t afford this special opportunity on my own - which is why I’m writing here.
Appealing for funds isn’t something that I’ve done before but I would hate to look back and see that I missed this wonderful opportunity because I was too proud to ask for help. So, to all my friends and family and anyone who has had the dream of seeing the world, can you PLEASE help me raise $3,500 by the beginning of February?
When you think about it, that’s $35 from 100 people. Of course, depending on your circumstances, $35 can be a lot (I know) - so please know that any gift - $5, $10, $20 - would be most appreciated.
I also really need help spreading the word - so please post, share and email this to anyone and everyone! For a few dollars you can help give the world a little bit of Hope!
Thanks!
