Hope for Kuade

For those who have had the chance to meet Kuade Bell they will tell you that he is no ordinary 20 year old...he is full of life, laughter and determination. Driven to succeed he has always wanted to be the best he can be. He is a person you could depend on and count on in times of need. Now he needs us!  It has been nearly three weeks since Kuade slipped into a coma. But we have not given up hope that he will wake from his slumber and be there to greet his first son. Since the beginning of his fight to stay alive the Doctors did not sugar coat his condition and brought very little good news.  At one point told our family that "I don't want to raise your hopes" going on to say that an CAT Scan revealed increased brain swelling and Kuade only had "minutes if not hours to live."  Well he proved those Doctors wrong! That was 2 weeks ago and still Kuade is fighting to survive. When he first entered the Intensive Care Unit at Naval Hospital he was heavily sedated as he was experiencing seizures. His body had to be cooled for 24 hours to protect his brain from swelling then heated for another 24 hours. Kuade was also placed on a ventilator, while he was able to breathe on his own it was not enough to keep him alive. After about a week and a half they were able to reduce the sedatives and we recieved word that the swelling in his brain was not increasing and the seizures decreased. We saw this as a good sign...but then we were informed that fluid was building in his lungs and required a procedure to drain them. As he struggled to breathe doctors determined it was pneumonia. While they were able to drain the fluid two days later we were told that the pneumonia had developed into Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and he had to recover on his own because no medication could treat the A-R-D-S. He has since had two more CAT Scans and an MRI prior to a tracheotomy.  Now a tube runs through his throat to help him breathe and to feed him.  As of Thursday Kuade was moved from Naval Hospital to GMH where he remains in ICU and while doctors continue to tell us not to raise our hopes we have not given up. We believe that he will once again prove the doctors wrong and come out of his coma as others have. We are continuing to stand by his side and fight with him but we need your help. While we do have insurance it does not cover the full costs of his medical care. At this time we are responsible for 30 percent of his medical expenses incurred while he was at Naval Hospital as well as the portion of his care not covered by insurance while he remains at GMH. If it is God's will to keep him in his slumber for a longer time so that he may heal, we are exploring long term care options. We are reaching out to the community as we must raise funds to help pay for his long term care at this point we do not know how long he will remain in this state. We are humbly asking you to keep Kuade in your prayers and we sincerely appreciate any donation you are able to provide no matter how small it may be. Thank you and God Bless.
