On Sunday, February 3rd, we were on our way to take Kira to Happy Tails dog park in Plantation, FL. Once we were stopped, Kira jumped out of the car window and ran away as fast as she could. She is a rescue from the St. Croix island, and she was not domesticated until we adopted her 1.5 years ago, 1 day after Hurricane Maria destroyed the island, so Kira is very keen on running away from home. It took many months (and lots of treats) but we finally got Kira to open up to us, love our 4 children, and finally stop running away! Today, 1 week and 1 day after Kira ran away, Plantation Police department found Kira under a bench. I was ecstatic when I got the phone call that they found my baby, until they told me that she was in pretty bad shape. She was hit by a car and her back right leg and foot was tore up, and she needed immediate emergency care. I left work, picked up my kids, and here we are. I have already paid a $500 deposit for her initial care. The doctors advised that due to her foot being "degloved" and the joint completely separated at the ankle, her best option is amputation. She is in a lot of pain, and her leg is severely infected, so Kira will be staying over night and under 24hour watch. The doctor also advised that this will be a long process, which will be a huge financial sacrifice for our family. We don't have much, but we want to do whatever it takes. I am hoping that anyone who sees the picture of Kira, sees the sweetheart that I absolutely adore. This was very unexpected and unfortunately something I was not prepared for at all.
