Josiah Rodriguez, born September 10, 2009, to two of the most loving parents a child could ever hope to have.
Brittany, my cousin, and her husband were over the moon with excitement over this new addition to their little family..but all too soon their joy turned to worry as they noticed Josiah had noticeable swelling to his head that would not go away, and he soon began to develop strabismus, a condition in which the eyes do not line up.
After several tests and a non definitive cause for the fluid build up in the brain, the doctors decided the best option was to perform surgery and place a shunt to help drain the excess fluid to decrease the ICP.
For the next couple years Josiah was doing great, running around, playing, and just being a happy little boy.
A little over a month ago, Josiah began complaining of SEVERE headaches, which were accompanied by vomitting. Nothing his parents did seemed to help, he just cried and cried with no relief.
Desperate for answers, and having exhausted every possible option, his parents took him to Cooks Childrens Hospital, where the doctors suspected Hydrocephalus, a condition that occurs when fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell. The name literally means “water on the brain.” Though they still have no definitive diagnosis, the doctor says it is a very complicated case.
Over the past week Josiah has undergone two surgeries to relieve the pressure on his brain, the most recent being this afternoon. The pressure keeps going up, and causing his heart rate to drop.
His parents are exhasuted beyond belief, constantly by his side, praying with every ounce of faith they have, believing in a miracle for their little boy.
