Hi,
My name is Esperanza Franco, and I am an immigrant. I was born in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of West Africa. For the past year I have fought to prevent others from being deported. Now I am asking you to stand with me as I fight my own deportation.
I had the privilege of coming to the U.S. with a student visa five years ago. I studied law and started working as a staff attorney for the Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project.
As an advocate for the Florence Project, I gave my heart and soul to the work. I drove back and forth to isolated immigration prisons every week, driving more than 8 hours per week. I spent countless hours inside the facilities, listening to stories of trauma, abuse, and persecution. As one of the very few native Spanish speakers, I was able to communicate with my clients in their soul language; and as the only immigrant worker on our adult team, I connected with my clients in a way that is impossible for someone who hasn’t been classified as an “alien,” a 2nd class citizen, under US immigration law.
The Florence Project presents itself as a group that fights zealously for the rights of immigrants. This past December, I asked them to sponsor me for a work visa since my student visa was expiring this July. The Florence Project then ensured me that they would apply for the work visa, but instead decided to place me on a random visa lottery—a lottery with a very slim chance of being selected.
After I expressed my concerns, management assured me that if the random lottery didn’t work, they would have the documents ready to apply for an actual work visa—the plan B. A month or so before my visa expired, I learned that I hadn’t been selected in the lottery and that the Florence Project had never started gathering any documents or followed through with the plan B.
As a result, the Florence Project has placed me on a direct path towards deportation.
That’s why I’m asking for your support today.
Now, because of the extreme negligence of the Florence Project, I am at risk of being detained in the same detention center where I have been supporting immigrants for the past year.
In the next month, I officially become “illegal,” and will be deportable. That’s why I am in desperate need of your help.
Before August 20th, I need to raise $ 18,000 to secure an attorney, apply for a visa and support myself in the process.
With your help, I can stay in the country I love and call home, and I can continue to fight for human rights and dignity.
With your help, I can bring awareness to the fact that immigrant workers are vulnerable and prone to be abused by employers, who can get away with the abuses because immigrants are forced to leave the country before they can speak up about the abuse.

Pasé incontables horas dentro de las prisiones, escuchando historias de trauma, abuso y persecución. Al ser una de los pocos trabajadores hablantes nativos de español, pude comunicarme con mis clientes en el lenguaje de su alma; y al ser la única trabajadora inmigrante en nuestro equipo, pude conectar con mis clientes de una manera que es imposible para alguien que no ha sido clasificado como un "alien", un ciudadano de segunda clase, bajo la ley de inmigración de los EE.UU.
El Proyecto Florence se presenta al mundo como un grupo que lucha fervientemente por los derechos de los inmigrantes. El pasado diciembre, les pedí que me patrocinaran para una visa de trabajo ya que mi visa de estudiante expiraba en julio. El Proyecto Florence me aseguró entonces que solicitarían una visa de trabajo, pero en lugar de obtenerla, decidieron colocar mi aplicación una lotería de visas al azar—una lotería con muy pocas posibilidades (~33%) de ser seleccionada, ya que es completamente aleatoria.
Después de expresar mi preocupación acerca de esta lotería aleatoria, la jefa del Proyecto me aseguró que si la lotería al azar no funcionaba, el Proyecto tendría los documentos listos para solicitar una visa de trabajo, es decir, pasar al plan B. Un mes antes de que mi visa expirara, me enteré de que no había sido seleccionada en la lotería y que el Proyecto Florence nunca comenzó a recopilar ningún documento ni tampoco a seguir con el plan B, tal y como me habían asegurado.
Como resultado, el Proyecto Florence me ha colocado en un camino directo hacia mi propia deportación.
Es por eso que estoy pidiendo tu apoyo hoy.
En este momento, debido a la extrema negligencia del Proyecto Florence, corro el riesgo de ser detenida y llevada a la misma prisión donde he estado apoyando a inmigrantes durante casi un año.
En el próximo mes, oficialmente me convertiré en "ilegal" y seré deportable. Es por eso que necesito tu ayuda desesperadamente. Antes del 20 de agosto, tengo que recaudar $ 18,000 para obtener un abogado, solicitar una visa y poder mantenerme y alimentarme durante el proceso que tarde la visa.
Con tu ayuda, puedo quedarme en el país que amo y considero mi hogar, y puedo seguir luchando por derechos humanos y por la dignidad humana.
