On January 23, 2017, as our dad, Tiny Schaffer, was driving home, his worst nightmare was about to take place. It was a wet and extremely windy night. An on-coming vehicle suddenly veered towards him and into his lane. As he swerved to avoid a head-on collision, his truck hydroplaned, flipped, and eventually struck a telephone pole. Fortunately, another driver saw or heard the impact and called 911. Tiny was extracted from the vehicle with the ‘jaws of life’ and rushed to Cooper Trauma Center.

TINY’S JOURNEY
When Tiny arrived at the hospital, he was paralyzed from his waist down. The doctors diagnosed him with a spinal cord injury (fractured C6 vertebrae) and performed surgery on his neck the following day. It was a two-part surgery where he had work done on both the front and back of his neck. His body was in shock and the doctors could not predict when or if everything would return to normal. His stay in the hospital was grueling, exhausting and frightening with many setbacks.
On February 3, 2017, Tiny was transferred to Magee Rehab in Philadelphia to undergo rigorous Occupational and Physical therapy. Each day a Hoyer Lift is used to transport him from the bed to his wheelchair so that he can begin another day of therapy. The road back will be long and challenging for our family. According to the doctors, his recovery will take over two years. Even though it is a slow process, each improvement is a step forward.
Today, because of his persistent and hardworking efforts, some movements have returned to his left leg. His goal is to walk again with the use of all his extremities.

Because of our family’s faith in Jesus Christ, we are facing each hurdle with hope and courage. We would like to thank everyone for their generosity, prayers and support during this difficult time. Your concern, prayers and love have helped ease the burden of our journey and we will be forever grateful.
FINANCIAL BURDENS
We are raising money to help with the overwhelming financial expenses that our parents are facing when our dad returns home. Since his two-story home is not wheelchair compatible, there are housing renovations and medical equipment that is needed that is not covered by insurance. Some of these are:
Full Bathroom on the first floor, Wheelchair ramp, widen doorways, Specialized Wheelchair, transportation needs, and other expenses.
From the bottoms of our hearts, we would like to express our love and appreciation to each and every one of you.
With Love,
Lauren, Jess, & Family
