Hello, my name is Dustin Vidrine, and I live in Acadiana, Louisiana. I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP2 gene mutation, X-linked) — a rare genetic eye disease that slowly takes away vision. Over time, my sight has narrowed, making even daily tasks a challenge. Despite this, I remain determined to provide for my children, finish my degree in psychology, and help others in the community through peer support and empowerment.

For the first time in history, gene therapy offers hope for people with my condition. It could mean preserving or even restoring vision — but the road to get there is not easy, and unfortunately, my insurance does not cover the specialized testing, scans, or travel required.

   •   My first appointment and scans alone cost $800.

   •   After that, there will be ongoing specialist visits, genetic testing, and imaging ($500–$1,500 each).

   •   I may also need to travel to out-of-state retina centers and gene therapy clinics, which adds transportation, lodging, and meal expenses.

   •   If I qualify for treatment, costs can rise significantly — and every step requires resources.

This journey is not only for me, but for my children, who deserve to see their father live with as much independence and hope as possible.
