Hope for Muhannad: A Journey to Safety

Hi, I’m Laura from Colorado, U.S.A., and I believe in justice and in a free Palestine.

I am doing my best to bring some good into this difficult world, where a genocide has been ongoing for almost two years with support, justification, and complicit silence. One day, our grandchildren will ask us where we were and what we did during the genocide of Palestinians. For me, this fundraiser—along with others I’ve supported and many personal efforts I make for my friends in Gaza—is part of my contribution to the cause.

I have been in contact with Muhannad since the beginning of 2024. Over time, we’ve developed a friendship and now speak almost every day. We both dream of a future where he and his family are free and able to live a dignified life, as every human being deserves.

This fundraiser is to help provide Muhannad and his family with the essential means to survive during this genocide. Food, water, medicine, clothing, and blankets are the most basic necessities of life. In Gaza, these are now extremely expensive, and with the economy destroyed, there are no opportunities to work or earn money. People can only rely on the generosity of those fortunate enough not to be living in Gaza right now.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please consider helping by donating and/or sharing this campaign.

Muhannad’s story
Hi, I am Muhannad from Gaza and this is my story.

We are a Palestinian family of seven, now living in a tent after losing our home in May.
This is a picture of our house.

Since the war began, we have faced repeated displacement, hunger, lack of clean water, and the absence of even the most basic necessities—food, shelter, and cooking gas.

The hardest struggle is that I and four of my siblings suffer from G6PD deficiency (also known as fava bean anemia). This condition makes the cheapest and most available foods in Gaza—lentils, beans, chickpeas—a deadly poison for us. Eating them, or even inhaling their steam, can cause our blood cells to break down, leading to severe anemia, exhaustion, and even death without immediate medical care.

In Gaza, there is no treatment and almost no safe food for us.
We live every day on the edge of danger.

Before the War
We owned a small grocery store that supported our family.
This is a picture of the grocery store.

My father studied medical analysis in Jordan but has been unable to work for more than 6 years due to severe back problems. My mother, a nutritionist and first aid specialist, lost her job in early 2023. My two eldest brothers were close to graduating from university in Information Technology and Graphic Design. I was in my final year of high school, dreaming of becoming a doctor. My younger siblings were in middle and primary school.
This is a picture of my certificates of excellence in the 10 years I studied.

We lived a modest but hopeful life, filled with education and dreams.
The war took everything—our home, our work, our food, and even our dreams.

Today
We live in a tent without safety or stability. We lost all sources of income. We desperately need safe food alternatives that will not kill us.

During the famine, survival cost was $400–$500 every day to secure safe food. On the days we couldn’t afford it, we were forced to eat beans or lentils, putting our lives in severe danger. Since August, some food has entered Gaza and prices have slightly decreased, but donations have also dropped. Our struggle continues.

❄️Winter Is Coming ...

With our latest displacement, we had to leave behind all our winter clothes and blankets in our home, which was later bombed.
Now we face a harsh winter in a fragile tent, with no protection from wind or rain.
We urgently need $500 per person (a total of $3,500) to secure warm clothes and blankets for the cold.
Your support can keep our family alive and warm this winter.

My Message to the World:

Every day, my dream of becoming a doctor dies a little inside me.
Every day, I think of leaving Gaza, but the borders are closed, and my future fades before my eyes.
If I had one chance to leave, I would take it without hesitation.

There is a phrase I keep repeating to myself:
“Blessed are those who lived before the war, and blessed are those who will be born after it… but may God help us who are stuck in between.”
