Hello, my name is Marie, Mateo’s mom.
My son is 3 years old, and since he was 3 months, he has been fighting Dravet Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy that has no cure. This condition causes medication-resistant seizures, developmental delays, speech and motor difficulties, and a high risk of sudden death (SUDEP).
Our Story
Mateo has also survived prolonged hospitalizations, surgeries, intubations, comas, and multiple emergencies that have deeply affected our lives:
- At 3 months, Mateo had his first 32-minute seizure.
- At 7 months, genetic testing confirmed the Dravet diagnosis; by that time, he had already had a 49-minute seizure requiring a "blue code" in the hospital.
- Just before his first birthday, he suffered a seizure lasting over one hour, went into a coma, had to be intubated to survive, and developed pneumonia.
- Later, a seizure left him unable to walk for 8 months. With therapy and faith, he was able to walk again.
⏱ Life Today
- Mateo received a VNS (vagus nerve stimulator), which has greatly helped reduce his seizures. Seizures continue; although shorter, they can drop his oxygen levels to 43%, forcing us to rush to the emergency room.
- His life involves constant medical care: blood tests every three weeks, visits to neurologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, pediatricians, and other specialists; speech, physical, swallowing, aquatic, and equine therapy; and a strict ketogenic diet that even limits basic foods.
- Mateo is on the list for an experimental medication that could significantly improve his quality of life.
- He has developmental delays and does not yet speak fully, but he already says his most important words: “Mama” to call me and “Mami” to call my mom, who is our greatest support in this journey.
Despite everything, Mateo smiles, plays, and gives his all every day to keep going.

Hola, mi nombre es Marie, la mamá de Mateo.
Mi hijo tiene 3 años y desde los 3 meses ha estado luchando contra el Síndrome de Dravet, una forma rara y grave de epilepsia que no tiene cura. Esta enfermedad provoca convulsiones resistentes a medicamentos, retrasos en el desarrollo, dificultades en el habla y la motricidad, y un alto riesgo de muerte súbita (SUDEP).
Nuestra Historia
Mateo ha sobrevivido a hospitalizaciones prolongadas, cirugías, intubaciones, comas y múltiples emergencias que han marcado profundamente nuestra vida:
- A los 3 meses, Mateo tuvo su primera convulsión de 32 minutos.
- A los 7 meses, los estudios genéticos confirmaron el diagnóstico de Dravet; para entonces ya había tenido una convulsión de 49 minutos que requirió un “código azul” en el hospital.
- Justo antes de su primer cumpleaños, sufrió una convulsión de más de una hora, entró en coma, tuvo que ser intubado para sobrevivir y desarrolló neumonía.
- Más adelante, una convulsión lo dejó sin poder caminar durante 8 meses. Con terapia y fe, pudo volver a caminar.
⏱ La Vida Hoy
- Mateo recibió un VNS (neuroestimulador del nervio vago), lo que ha ayudado mucho a reducir sus convulsiones. Las convulsiones continúan; aunque son más cortas, pueden bajar su nivel de oxígeno hasta 43%, obligándonos a correr a emergencias.
- Su vida implica cuidados médicos constantes: análisis de sangre cada tres semanas, visitas a neurólogos, cardiólogos, gastroenterólogos, nutriólogos, pediatras y otros especialistas; terapias del habla, físicas, de deglución, acuáticas y equinoterapia; y una dieta cetogénica estricta que incluso limita alimentos básicos.
- Mateo está en lista para un medicamento experimental que podría mejorar significativamente su calidad de vida.
- Tiene retrasos en el desarrollo y aún no habla completamente, pero ya dice sus palabras más importantes: “Mamá” para llamarme a mí y “Mami” para llamar a mi mamá, nuestro mayor apoyo en este proceso.
A pesar de todo, Mateo sonríe, juega y da lo mejor de sí todos los días para seguir adelante.
