Kali is a lively 14 weeks old chihuahua puppy and growing quickly! She was born deaf with a congenital heart condition, PDA. It is a condition where the valve of the heart doesn't seal properly during birth which can be as simple as a mild heart murmur or as severe as significant heart defect leading to heart failure within the first 2 years of life and less than 50% of puppy's making it the first year. I was told that Kali would need further evaluation to determine the extent of her condition. She was the puppy that no one wanted because of her health issues .. and I won't lie .. after having recently lost our sweet Cordelia (our little chihuahua of almost 17 years) I felt incredibly sad thinking of possibly losing this puppy. We had spent many years loving and caring for our little girl .. despite the pain of losing her we are forever grateful for the years that we had with her. We decided to give this little girl a chance at living a normal life with a forever home regardless of her limitations. And who better to understand the commitment and care required than us?! Kali is nothing short of a sparky puppy who plays as hard as she sleeps!! She came home with very own "therapy dog" .. her sister Luna, who seems to be her partner in crime, a real Thelma & Louise!!
After further evaluation from a cardiac specialist they determined that Kali will indeed need surgery for survival and sooner than what we anticipated which doesn't give us time to pull together this kind of money.
This is a very expensive surgery as well as requiring medication to help maintain her heart until we can get the surgery. She needs this soon!
The good news is that PDA is curable with surgery and very successful! Without surgery her prognosis is very poor with inevitable heart failure and life expectancy will be less than 2 years.
We will be traveling to Albany for her surgery where they are specialized in this procedure as well as have a lot of experience with her small size.
