Hope for Jaydon
On Monday, July 19, 2021, my 14-year-old great-nephew, Jaydon Finegan was critically injured by a falling tree in the parish of St. Ann, Jamaica West Indies. He was rushed in an unconscious state to the St. Ann’s Bay hospital. First reports were that he wouldn’t be alive for long, but after three weeks, by the grace of God he is now showing signs of improvement.
Jaydon is a rising 9th grade student at Ferncourt High School in St. Ann. He was always a humble, hardworking and caring young man. Now his young life has been shattered and his dream of becoming an architect are dashed!
Jaydon suffered multiple injuries including:
- Bilateral pulmonary contusions
- Multiple rib fractures
- Left clavicle fracture
- Displacement of different sections of spine
- Both legs broken (tibia).
As a result of injuries, he has had a catheter inserted to remove waste and he has no feeling or movement in the lower part of his body (legs, feet, toes). In spite of Jaydon’s dire prognosis, he regained consciousness, tries to be in good spirits, and has been making daily progress. He is now able to breathe on his own, speak, and eat small portions of food.
As a family, we believe in the amazing power of God to heal Jaydon! Lots and lots of prayers are going up for him daily from family and friends. We remain hopeful that he will eventually recover from his injuries with the help of medical professionals, but it will take time, effort and money. The local hospital doesn’t have the necessary resources to effectively treat him, so he has to be moved to another hospital in Kingston where he can undergo surgery. However, the materials needed to perform the surgery have to be purchased elsewhere and brought into the hospital. Strange, but true! (Family members have even been asked to purchase necessary things from outside like food and pain medicine to ease Jaydon’s pain).
My heart goes out to my nephew and his mom, who also suffered tragedy in her earlier years. I want to help him, not only as a family member, but as an educator for almost 40 years helping children accomplish their dreams. With your help, I want to give Jaydon a fighting chance. I want to give him hope. I keep hearing his voice on the phone, crying out in pain, “Auntie, my back hurts, my chest hurts!” I am haunted by his cries, and vow to do all in my power to help him. No child deserves to be in such pain.
Owing to Jaydon’s injuries, he will need to have a spinal fusion. The prescription includes 8 Pedicle screws which cost over $500,000 (JMD). I am establishing this fund to help Jaydon’s chance of recovery by way of surgery and other related costs for hospital stay, transportation and rehabilitation. The total cost is not yet known. Since youth is in his favor, and he had no preexisting medical conditions, we have every hope that he will recover and be able to pursue his educational goals. Your contributions, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated.
