Hi everyone,
I never imagined I would be writing something like this, but my sister Ashley and her husband Matt are going through the most terrifying and heartbreaking time of their lives.
Matt is extremely sick, and everything has happened so suddenly. What started as pneumonia has turned into a medical nightmare. Doctors now believe that this may have been caused by a severe and rare reaction to the medication he was given to treat the pneumonia. Since then, his body has been shutting down one system at a time.
Matt had already been off work trying to recover, hoping things would improve, but instead they continued to get worse. When his condition became more serious, he was admitted into Steinbach Hospital and later transferred to HSC, where he is now receiving intensive care. Everything has happened so fast, and nothing could have prepared them for this.
His liver is failing, and doctors still do not fully understand why. His numbers are not giving clear answers, and he is experiencing hepatic encephalopathy. A biopsy is still needed, and there is a real possibility that he may require a liver transplant.
He also has an ulcer in his small intestine that is causing internal bleeding, along with a serious candida infection in his throat. He is currently on strong antibiotics and antifungal medications.
On top of all of this, his kidneys have gone into acute failure and are currently functioning at 0%. Dialysis has been keeping him stable, but every day is uncertain.
Ashley has had to drop everything, travel, take time off work, and live in a constant state of fear just to be by his side, praying, advocating for him, and trying to stay strong while her world feels like it is falling apart. With Matt unable to work and their lives completely turned upside down, the financial stress is only adding to the weight they are carrying.
Matt is one of the kindest, funniest, and most caring people I know. He is the type of person who would give the shirt off his back without hesitation. Seeing him like this, and seeing Ashley so scared and helpless, is devastating.
Right now, they need all the love, support, and strength they can get. If you are able to donate, anything at all will help ease the financial burden they are carrying while Matt focuses on fighting to get better. And if you cannot donate, please share this. Every share means more people praying, more people caring, and more people standing with them.
Thank you for reading, for caring, and for being part of their support system during this unimaginable time.
Updates will be posted as more information comes in.
