A little under a week ago, our friend, nephew, brother, cousin and loved one, Dwaine Paul Maney was severely burned by the rising temperatures in the Las Vegas desert. After leaving lunch, Dwaine passed out in front of a local restaurant and suffered a brutal fall, alongside third-degree burns from the scorching asphalt. Before being rescued by restaurant employees, Dwaine lay unconscious, suffering from life-altering burns, which may cause underlying damage to his bones, muscles, and tendons. In addition to the burns, Dwaine is left with a massive knot on his forehead and experiencing unimaginable pain. Under sedation, he's experienced days in the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada's ICU and is now pushing forward in the trauma center.
Although it's a unique case, in 2019, the University of Nevada Las Vegas found 173 pavement burn cases in Southern Nevada throughout the previous five years. Over 85% percent of those cases happened on days when temperatures were above 95 degrees. According to the Las Vegas Sun, "...when the temperature outside is more than 110 degrees, pavement temperatures can reach well above 140 degrees, resulting in second and third-degree burns within seconds of direct skin contact."
We hope to collect $10,000 to support his ongoing medical expenses, recovery, and living expenses over the next 90-days, as we know he won't be able to work during the healing process.
We're also asking for prayers, meditation, and positive thoughts, as we come together in the community to support Dwaine during this unprecedented time. We'll keep you all posted throughout the next couple of months.
Thanks in advance.
In gratitude,
The Despenza Family
