Hope for Boone
This fundraiser is for Bennett, Becky and Boone.
Boone was born on August 10, 2021. There were some complications during labor that led to him being airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
Short version of what happened: complications during labor led to a lack of oxygen to his brain, and issues with the functioning of his heart and lungs.
Long version of what happened as I currently understand it: he aspirated meconium while in utero (breathed in his poop in the womb). It happens in about 1-3 of every 1000 births. This led to hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE, lack of oxygen to his brain) as well as persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH, too high of pressure in his lungs). HIE can cause moderate to severe brain injury, but we won’t know the severity for a while. They’ll do an MRI in a few days that can give us some info, but the full extent of the damage may not be known for weeks or months. PPH is making it hard for his lungs and heart to work, but once they can get that under control there shouldn’t be long term damage.
To treat the PPH he’s on a cocktail of IV meds. To treat the HIE he’s on a 72 hour cooling protocol where they reduce his body temperature to about 92 degrees for three days and then slowly warm him back up. It’s been found to reduce brain damage associated with HIE.
He’ll be in the UC Davis NICU in Sacramento for at least a week. He’s 6.4 pounds and absolutely adorable, despite all the wires and tubes. The NICU team says he was quite fussy while being worked on, which is a good sign. There is no doubt that he is a fighter.
The funds we can raise for them will help ease some of the burden this amazing family is dealing with. As we all know, medical bills, especially a helicopter ride are extremely expensive and this is one way we can help them focus on Boone and not have to worry so much about finances. Along with medical bills, the money will be used to help with lodging, food and any other costs associated with fighting this unfortunate event.
