I’m a high school student and together with my mother, we are raising funds to support There is Hope Within Us (THUS) — a residential home in Sudan for children with cancer who are socioeconomically disadvantaged (even below the country poverty line). These children are not only battling cancer, but also the devastating impact of war.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Many families have been forced to flee their homes due to violence and instability. Children with cancer — already among the most vulnerable — have been especially affected.

Between December 2022 and January 2023, I volunteered at THUS to support children undergoing chemotherapy through art activity. It was a time of connection, community, and care. But when the war broke out, many of the children were displaced, and sadly, some of them passed away.

Mawada, a sweet young girl with left eye cancer who once held a handmade playdough flower during our art sessions, was one of them.

Despite the tragedy, THUS has not given up. The organization has opened a new residential home in Meroe City in Northern Sudan, where 22 children and their parents are currently sheltered. These children are receiving chemotherapy through local charity efforts at Meroe Hospital.

But they still need help.

The home is struggling to cover basic needs like food, rent, and transportation to the hospital.
