Hi, my name is Nicole, and I’m reaching out for help for my brother-in-law, Rex Bethel.

Rex is one of those people who quietly shows up for his family without ever asking for recognition. He is a kind, hardworking family man who has always put others first. He takes wonderful care of his wife, Sue, and is a proud father to his daughter, Brooke, and his son, Mark, and a loving grandpa to two grandchildren, Logan and Natalie. If you know Rex, you’ve probably seen him laughing, joking, or playing with the grandkids. He has a great sense of humor and a big heart.

Recently, our family’s world was turned upside down.

After experiencing increasing trouble swallowing, Rex went to the doctor. He underwent an endoscopy, and just one week later, on November 13, he received devastating news: he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer that has already metastasized to stage 4.

As someone who is currently fighting stage 4 metastatic breast cancer myself, this diagnosis hits especially close to home. I know firsthand how overwhelming, frightening, and exhausting this journey is — not just physically, but emotionally and financially. Watching someone you love face this is heartbreaking.

Rex is now undergoing chemotherapy treatments and is receiving palliative care, with the goal of managing symptoms, improving comfort, and giving him the best quality of life possible. Unfortunately, this also means he is unable to work, and the medical expenses are quickly piling up.

Between chemotherapy treatments, medical bills, medications, travel to appointments, and everyday living expenses, the financial burden has become more than the family can manage on their own.

This fundraiser is being created to help support Rex and Sue during this incredibly difficult time. Funds raised will go toward medical costs, treatment-related expenses, lost income, and daily necessities so they can focus on what truly matters — time together, comfort, and care.
