Hi, my name is Maurice, and I am turning to you today through GoFundMe to seek support during yet another challenging time in my life. Recently, my health took an unexpected turn, leading to a discovery that has required immediate and focused medical attention.
I recently experienced stomach problems and weight loss, leading to an emergency room visit and two CT scans. This scan revealed unexpected growths on his kidneys, including a possible renal tumor on the left kidney. Despite the possible diagnosis, I'm hopeful that the growths are benign. My next step is to consult with my urologist to decide on the appropriate treatment plan.
Update: I want to share an update with you all following my recent visit with the urologist and review of my MRI results. The findings indicate multiple masses on my left kidney, the largest being up to 2.5 cm, which are highly suspicious for renal cell carcinoma (cancer). The MRI has shown that these tumors are solid, and one is centrally located, which complicates potential surgical options. Given the complexity and risks associated with removing all of the masses individually, my urologist has recommended a full removal of the left kidney. This decision aims to eliminate the risk of any remaining cancer cells and complications that might arise from partial removal.
Although the need for surgery is clear, I have been given some time to make this decision—up to 5 months—though my doctor advises not to delay too long to prevent any possible spread to other organs.
Why am I fundraising? The emergency room visits, the diagnostic tests, the medical consultations and kidney surgery have led to mounting medical expenses. Through this GoFundMe, I aim to raise funds to cover the costs.
Update so far: (2) ER visit, Xray, Ultrasound, (2) CT scans, (1) MRI, (3) Radiologist bills, (4) Urologist / Oncologist consultations, left laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (kidney removal) surgery on August 8th.

Health Update 8/14/2024: Hello, everyone. I just wanted to share a few updates on how things have been going since my surgery. Today is Day 6 post-op from Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy (kidney removal). Reading the OP Notes - Turns out there was a bit of unexpected excitement during my operation - Tropical Storm Debbie caused a water leak in the OR, noticed just minutes after they put me under. The amazing medical team quickly made the decision to pause the procedure, move me to another OR, and the surgery went ahead flawlessly with no complications. Amazing stuff right!
Since coming home, I’ve been doing pretty well, hanging in there. I’ve had my second good night’s sleep, of +5 hours. The pain is manageable, though it and the fatigue do come and go in waves throughout the day. My appetite is about half of what it usually is, but it's coming back. I'm around 9 pounds lighter than the start of August, which can be expected. One challenge has been sticking to my 10-pound weight lifting restriction for this first four weeks of recovery. It’s surprising how many everyday tasks require more effort than you’d think! Even closing a window can be tricky if it’s stubborn.
Additionally, my kidney has been sent off to pathology for tissue testing to confirm the type, grade, and stage of cancer. I’m currently awaiting those results.
I’m taking things one day at a time and feeling grateful for the continued support from all of you. I’ll keep you updated as I continue on this recovery journey.
