Alice's husband, Jose, has been battling serious heart complications and has now reached the point where a transplant is the only option. Insurance was initially covering a portion of the procedure and transported him to a hospital 5 hours from home. Upon his arrival, they are now claiming this hospital is out of network. They are searching for a hospital that is now in network. Even with insurance covering a portion, it still leaves a significant amount of expense. The pre-surgery care, the transplant, the ongoing post-operative treatment—these costs add up quickly. They include hospital stays, travel expenses, medications, specialist visits, and a multitude of other recovery expenses. The financial burden during this already overwhelming time is more than the family can manage alone. We are asking for any support you can give, whether it's a donation or simply sharing this fundraiser. Every contribution will go toward Jose's medical care and recovery.

A little bit about Alice, one of my dearest and oldest friends: life hasn't always been easy for her, but she has pushed through more things that would break many. The sudden loss of her infant daughter, moving back home when her father was ill to assist in his care for his final days, providing for her son as a single mother, assisting her mother and older brother with their illnesses and disabilities—she is the example of giving you the shirt off her back. I have witnessed her selflessness and have seen her strength when faced with all of this adversity. She is truly one of the strongest women I know. She finally found the light at the end of her long dark tunnel, her Jose. They drove tractor trailers across the country and did very well until Jose came down with COVID in 2021. He had a life-saving heart surgery, but unfortunately, they had to come off the road. They purchased a home on two acres in Kansas, where they were planning on living their humble life. They chose to raise animals and homestead, a simple quiet life. Jose loves to sit on his porch and overlook the little farm they created, while Alice tends to the animals' needs and homesteads. She taught herself to can, to preserve, to live simply and happily. Jose loves to laugh and bring joy to everyone he encounters. Alice is again exemplifying strength. She is working all week, coming home to tend to the animals and all that entails, all while trying, hoping, and praying that her Jose will make it through the day. Then, on Friday nights, she has been driving the 5.5 hours one way to the hospital to spend some time with Jose, to speak to social workers, nurses, and doctors to figure out the next course of action.
