HOPE IS THE LAST THING WE LOSE.

THE STORY OF ALEXANDRA SÁNCHEZ  VEGAS FIELD
29 YEARS – 21 SURGERIES

Traduce:
Alexandra words.
You cannot imagine what it is to be young and live twenty years between the Hospital and a bed. I’ve been through 29 surgeries to save my leg, and one was worse than the other. I fell three hundred meters down a ravine. My first reaction was to hold on to the steering wheel and beg God for help. I tumbled, lost consciousness. I cried, prayed to God – I saw my life depicted like in the movies. I saw my daughter who was just three years old. I said, “this is not the end for me, I’m not going to die here.”
The firemen arrived, rescued me and from there they took us to the closest private hospital. I won’t name any names, because it doesn’t matter now, but I believe I was somewhat the victim of malpractice since the very start. I went into surgery.
I spent fifteen days surviving – I had an open fracture of the femur; my ribs broke, which expanded my lung; my clavicles, cheekbones, ears was cut almost all of it and my leg  was severely injured , so much so that there was a possibility that they might have had to cut it off, but back then technology was not as advanced as it is today. They used the wrong bone plate, my leg remained broken; it turned into a kind of bone that would break very easily, because in each surgery they would put me in a cast that went from here (points to her chest, below the breasts) to the tip of my toes. I couldn’t put a pillow under my head, I had to be lying down completely.
This is how I spent many years… many years… without being able to go to the bathroom, letting the shower stream fall on my head and body, being able to take a bath, feel the water, eat by myself - because sometimes I had to be fed because I was too uncomfortable, I couldn’t even drink liquids, I couldn’t go to the bathroom to relieve myself. It was very frustrating… very hard.
So my leg was shortened by eight centimeters. I mean, eight centimeters is this long (she represents the length by putting up four fingers on one hand together) and two more fingers; this is what my leg is missing. So I have to add a shoe on top of it all - find a shoe that is suited to add stuff in it… my back hurts; I can’t walk right because my knee is stuck. I can’t walk much, I always have to use a cane, or sometimes a crutch.

Maryori Daboin says: (she is like a dougther)
To her, the entire world is nice. She is friendly, loving, eager to help; she is a role model as a mother, friend, daughter, wife. In these two years that I have been here, without my mom, she has been my other mom.
During these eight years I faltered; I didn’t want to get into this because I’m afraid that anything I do will make me once again go through that hospital-bed-hospital-bed routine. Today I can’t afford it – before I had someone to take care of me, but not anymore. I can’t afford it. So, on my doctor’s recommendation, I need to get a hip replacement. The cost of the prosthesis is like ten thousand dollars ($10,000). That was a month ago, plus the surgery, the doctors, the hospital, it’s like seven or eight thousand dollars more. We are talking about seventeen or eighteen thousand dollars ($18.000) if costs haven’t changed. It has been many years… it has been many years of having gone through a lot, and I have the dream of going back to how I was before. Of course, not to be like I was twenty years ago, but better. Today that is what my mindset needs to be. I just ask for the hope to fulfill this dream – for this to be my last surgery, and to be able to lead a normal life.
