In 1996, Mongolian artist and composer Sandagjav created a sacred ritual song called “Takhilgiin Magtaal” (The Praise of Offering). The song was composed for spiritual ceremonies and holds deep cultural meaning within Mongolian tradition.
Over the years, this composition has traveled far beyond its original context. It has been performed, recorded, and shared widely — particularly by singers and bands in China — without permission and without acknowledging the original composer. As a result, millions of listeners around the world know the melody, but not the artist who created it.
For many years, Sandagjav and his family tried to address this situation quietly and respectfully. Eventually, they chose to step back, despite the emotional and financial impact of seeing a sacred work circulate without recognition.
This crowdfunding is not about blame or legal action. It is about supporting the artist and honoring the origin of the work. By contributing, you help:
- Support Sandagjav and his family directly
- Acknowledge the cultural and artistic value of this composition
- Show appreciation for traditional and indigenous creators whose work is often shared without credit
At the end of February, I will be traveling to Mongolia for a family visit. My hope is to personally present Sandagjav and his family with this fundraising gift as a meaningful token of kindness from our community. From Mongolia and throat singing enthusiasts, musicians, and listeners worldwide who believe that cultural heritage and artistic work deserve respect. Thanks everyone!
