On Saturday, July 11th, our community lost a bright, kind, and deeply loved young man — Yandel Gonzalez, only 15 years old — to gun violence. No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing a child, and yet here we are, grieving a life taken far too soon.
Yandel was a student at South High School, active in sports, and a dedicated boxer with South Side Sluggers. He was incredibly social, full of energy, and known for his kindness and loving nature. He had a way of connecting with people, making friends easily, and bringing light into every room he entered.
I, Kassie Giacchino, had the privilege of working with Yandel and his family through Youth Alternatives for three years. I watched him grow, mature, and strengthen his relationships with the people who loved him most. He was becoming such a sweet, respectful young man — and his life was taken far too early.
As many know, funerals and memorial services come with significant expenses, and Yandel’s family is facing unimaginable grief while trying to give him the proper service he deserves. I am helping this family raise funds to support funeral costs and any additional expenses during this devastating time.
If you are able to donate, your support means more than you know. If you cannot donate, we completely understand — times are hard for many. Sharing this fundraiser, spreading awareness, and continuing conversations about proper gun safety are just as appreciated.
Thank you for helping honor Yandel’s memory and supporting his family through this tragedy.
