Honoring Virginia Allen: The Last Black Angel

Donation protected
Our team from South Coffeyville High School in Oklahoma is embarking on a meaningful journey to honor Virginia Allen, the last living member of the Black Angels. The Black Angels were a courageous group of African American nurses who left the South to help combat a public health crisis at Seaview Hospital in New York, where white nurses had begun quitting during the tuberculosis epidemic. Mrs. Allen, now 94 years old, played a vital role in saving countless lives and breaking barriers in healthcare.

Our team consists of four dedicated sophomores: Lacy Conley, Mady Everitt, Summer Kent, and Marley Phillips. We are participating in the Discovery Award project for the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes, and our goal is to travel to Staten Island to meet Mrs. Allen in person. By interviewing her and touring the facilities where she worked, we hope to capture her story firsthand and preserve her legacy for future generations. This experience will allow us to include powerful video clips and personal insights in our documentary, making it a richer and more authentic tribute.

The girls are energized and inspired after speaking with Mrs. Allen on the phone, and their excitement is driving our project forward. With your support, we can bring history to life and share the incredible story of the Black Angels with the world. Your contribution will help us cover travel expenses and ensure that Virginia Allen’s story is told with the respect and depth it deserves.
