Vernon Carpenter, known to many as The Mayor of Gaines Street in Davenport, Iowa, was a beloved figure in his community. For over 20 years, Vernon sat on his front porch, waving and chatting with everyone who passed by—whether they were on their way to work, school, or just out for a walk. His warm presence and genuine kindness brought smiles to countless faces, and he became a local legend, even earning a banner in his yard and features on local TV and radio. Vernon never asked for anything in return; he simply loved people and found joy in making others happy.

A few months ago, Vernon suffered a stroke. While he was recovering, he faced new challenges and needed to move into an assisted living facility. Not long after, he experienced a serious fall that resulted in bleeding on his brain and required multiple surgeries. During this difficult time, Vernon endured two more strokes and fell into a coma for nearly two weeks. He was transferred between hospitals and underwent several operations, but the damage was extensive. After much consideration and with heavy hearts, the decision was made to remove him from life support. Despite doctors’ expectations, Vernon held on for eight more days before passing away on March 16, 2026.

Vernon’s passing has left a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. The medical bills from his time in assisted living, hospital stays, surgeries, and now funeral expenses have created a significant financial burden.
