As I sit here in the ICU, I am looking at my mother and trying to process the unthinkable. My mother has always been the strongest person I know, a single mother of six who never backed down from an obstacle. She was the woman who was always there when someone needed help, whether it was a place to stay, a warm meal, or protection in a dangerous moment.

It breaks my heart to say that it doesn’t look like she will get through this final fight. While we are facing the end of her journey, I am also navigating a difficult path of my own. I recently underwent an emergency hysterectomy due to serious health concerns. Despite having insurance through work, the resulting medical debt has left me in a position where i cannot afford to give my mother the proper burial she deserves.

My mother’s wish was to be laid to rest at Hilltop Cemetery, right next to her mother, Elnora Jackson. I would give anything to make these last steps happen exactly as she wished so she can finally be at peace.
