Honoring the Life of Sarah Sally Angulo Curry

Although Sally's life was taken by Covid at 3:33 pm on October 5th, her legacy of kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, grace, fortitude, perseverance, humor, and creativity will live on for all of us, family, friends, colleagues, who were oh so lucky to have known and loved her.

We hope to honor her life by installing a memorial bench at the train stop in downtown Novato.

Hers was a quietly heroic life, dedicated to the betterment and comfort of others as well as the well being of our planet.  Sally didn't wear a watch.  When she was with you, all that mattered was what you and Sally were doing in the moment.

She had a wonderful sense of magic and wonder and whimsy, like Disney and Harry Potter.

For over 20 years as an oncology nurse at UCSF's Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Sally's grounded, deeply empathetic nature soothed and comforted thousands of of patients and their families through the years.

Because of her creative and adventurous nature, she jumped at the chance to help UC convert to electronic charting in the late-90s which she did until she retired.

After retiring from UC, Sally continued to give of herself in a variety of settings including Hospice of Marin and Sonoma, Southwest Community Clinic in Santa Rosa and as a special medical needs nurse for Novato Unified School district the past 7 years.

Sally believed in and acted upon, the importance of the environment and education.  She graduated from the Environmental Forum of Marin in the late 80's and continued to care for, and learn about  our precious parklands for the rest of her life, including things like foraging for mushrooms, attending presentations on bats at Olompali and learning about organic gardening at Indian Valley College.

In the mid-90s, she was part of a group of woman who founded the Novato Charter School using  Waldorfian principles  concerning the importance of exploration as the basis for the school's curriculum because "exploration" very much  aligned with Sally's, and the other women's, own educational instincts.

Sally loved to walk and hike and explore. She loved to investigate her surroundings and throughout her life her observations were sometimes so unexpectedly insightful and unique, that the family and friends came to refer to her insights as "Sallyisms"; she just had a special way of looking at things sometimes.

And she had a special way of living her life.   While in her 50s Sally trained and competed in a Triathlon to help raise money for Curing Leukemia.  While in her 60s she went back to school to get her BS.  She was close to retirement, but she just wanted that Bachelor's degree.  Also while in her 60s she worked with Habitat for Humanity and helped build low income units in downtown Novato.

She just had this quiet doggedness to do good, to live good.

This doggedness was a part of her battle with Parkinson's this past 10 years.  She absolutely refused to let Parkinson's define who she was and despite Parkinson's effects, she still wanted to help me do physical things around the house, to open the car door for herself, and to finally starting her garden this past spring.

She didn't want to be seen as disabled and she never ever complained, even a little bit.   Never.

Sally's was a quietly heroic life.  She was a warm light in our world  and she will be missed.

But our goal is to honor her life and memory and perhaps to inspire in us our better instincts.

The idea of a bench comes from something Sally said about a certain part of a hike on Mt Burdell.

After getting to the top of this hard part of the hike, Sally oftentimes brought up the idea of a place to sit and rest.  She even wanted us as a couple to consider donating a bench, a block of granite so that people could sit, rest and enjoy the view of Rush Creek and the hills above Sonoma.

The City of Novato is helping us find a place near the train station.  Sally loved that the train was finally running after many years of dormancy and she and her sister were one of SMART's very first passengers.

We hope to install a bench dedicated to the legacy and life of a uniquely wonderful woman, Sarah Sally Angulo Curry.

Please support our efforts.  Thank you.

Be at peace my love.
