In Loving Memory of Leslie Smith
On January 14th, Leslie Smith passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50. Leslie was a passionate advocate for others, devoted mother and grandmother, and a tireless litigator who spent much of her life fighting for those who needed her most.
A Legacy of Compassion
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Leslie earned her JD from the Brandeis School of Law in 2004 and dedicated nine years to serving as a public defender. But Leslie wasn't just an attorney—she was a champion for justice who understood that behind every case was a human being deserving of dignity and constitutional protection.
As her friend and colleague Clay Duvall wrote recently: "She cared about people. And she wanted that open, bare knuckled environment exposed so she could tell her people what the fight was, what the consequences were, and whether the match was worth it. Leslie Smith protected people whose lives were on the line."
Anyone who knew Leslie knows that every conversation eventually came back to her two beautiful daughters, Chelsea and Zoe. She was immensely proud of them and never missed an opportunity to tell you so. If you tried to schedule a meeting that conflicted with time with her children or her twin grandsons, Rory and Jude, the conversation could wait. Her family was her world.
How You Can Help
Leslie's sudden passing has left her daughters facing the overwhelming burden of memorial and final expenses far sooner than anyone expects to lose a parent. We're asking the community—especially those in the legal field who knew Leslie's dedication and compassion—to help ease this financial strain during an incredibly difficult time.
Funds raised will go directly toward memorial service costs, final expenses, and supporting Chelsea and Zoe as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
The United States Constitution does not mandate that everyone gets a Leslie Smith. But as Clay said, "the Constitution sure hopes you get her."
Leslie gave everything to protect others. Now we have the chance to support the family she loved so dearly.
Thank you for your generosity, your memories, and your support during this difficult time.
This fundraiser is being organized by Alli Rippy, a childhood friend of Chelsea Cook, Leslie's eldest daughter.
