My name is Debbie Wentling and I have been friends with Laura Dean Mooney for more than 50 years.  On Thursday evening, October 10, 2019, Laura suffered a massive heart attack in her home and passed away.  She leaves behind her husband, Karl, and daughter, Tara, as well as a large extended family and many friends.

In 1991, nine months after giving birth to her only child, Laura’s husband, Mike Dean, was tragically killed by a drunk driver.  Almost immediately, her passion became educating the public on the dangers of drunk driving. Several years later, she met and married Karl Mooney who was the Associate Athletic Director at Texas A&M University.  Together, they became active community members and provided meals and a home setting for many student athletes.  In 2008, Laura became the National President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and her mission for the remainder of her life was to save lives.    Karl currently serves as College Station’s Mayor, and both of them have selflessly devoted their time, resources and energy into our community for many years.

Needless to say, Laura’s death has impacted family, friends and colleagues in Texas and across the nation but none more than Karl and Tara.  Donations to MADD in Laura’s name are very much appreciated but if you feel led and would like to help her family on a more personal level, would you please consider honoring Laura by contributing anything you can to this Go Fund Me account?  All donations will be used to help with the family’s expenses.
