Some people leave an impression that never fades. They have a way of making everyone around them feel seen, valued, and loved. My uncle, Javanti M. Smith, (Sweet Man) was one of those people.

He was a cherished son, devoted father, loving brother, proud uncle, treasured cousin, and loyal friend—someone who had a way of making everyone feel like family.

Beyond his love for family and friends, Javanti was deeply committed to his community. As a violence prevention activist on Chicago’s Near North Side, he worked alongside N365 and No Kids Die in the Chi, dedicating himself to creating safer communities and uplifting the lives of others.

Our family is heartbroken by the unexpected loss of someone who meant so much to so many. As his niece, I created this fundraiser to give everyone who knew and loved Javanti the opportunity to honor his life and celebrate the memories he gave us.

Since his passing, we’ve been comforted by the stories, prayers, phone calls, visits, messages, and heartfelt memories shared by everyone whose life Javanti touched. They have reminded us just how deeply he was loved and how many people were blessed to know him.

This fundraiser is a way to come together in celebration of Javanti’s life and the memories he gave us. Together, we can honor Javanti by giving him the fitting celebration he deserves.
