Honoring the Life of James Bates: A Father, Husband, Coach, and Community Leader.
We are heartbroken to share the passing of James Bates, a beloved husband, father, coach, and friend who touched countless lives. James was only 41 years old when he passed away from congestive heart failure, a condition he developed after battling COVID-19. His loss was sudden, devastating, and has left a wide, painful void in the family and community he poured so much love into.
James was the kind of person who made you feel seen. Whether he was cheering from the sidelines, mentoring young players, or simply cracking a joke to brighten someone’s day, he showed up with his whole heart.
As a longtime youth football and basketball coach, he helped guide children both on and off the court—teaching discipline, teamwork, confidence, and kindness. Many of the kids he coached say he changed their lives. Truthfully, he changed whole neighborhoods.
Most of all, James was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Bennetta Hann Bates, and seven beautiful children, ages 8 to 18. His children were his pride and joy.
Every game, every school milestone, every late-night talk—James was there. He worked hard to make sure they felt supported, protected, and deeply loved. Now, this young family is facing a future without their rock.
We are raising funds to help cover James’s memorial service, as well as ongoing support for his children as they navigate life without their father. Bennetta is doing everything she can to stay strong for her kids, but no one can prepare for the heartbreak and financial strain that comes with an unexpected loss like this.
If you can give—whether it’s $5 or $500—please know that your contribution is more than a donation. It’s a way of honoring James’s legacy of support, leadership, and compassion. It’s a way of lifting up a family that has always been there for others. And it’s a way of helping ensure his children continue to have the stability, opportunities, and love he worked so hard to give them.
Please donate and share this page and a prayer.
James Bates gave so much to his community. We hope this fundraiser gives a little back to the family he loved beyond measure.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and prayers during this painful time.
