On June 2, 2026, our family lost a beloved husband, brother, uncle, grandfather figure, and friend, Floyd Stanford Johnson, affectionately known to many as "Stan."
Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Floyd was the youngest of ten children and spent much of his life in the Hilltop Homes community. To some, Hilltop was known as the projects. To our family, it was home. It was where lifelong friendships were formed, where neighbors became family, and where Floyd became a familiar and respected presence.
Anyone who knew Floyd remembers his unmistakable cool. He carried himself with a smooth stride, a quiet confidence, and a calm spirit that made people smile. He often joked, "I play it cool and dig all jive... that's the way I stay alive." That saying captured who he was. Floyd was a man who rarely sought attention but left a lasting impression on those around him.
Like many people, Floyd faced difficult chapters in life. He spent years struggling with circumstances and choices that led to incarceration. Yet one of the things that defined him most was his willingness to acknowledge his mistakes and work to rise above them. In his later years, he made a conscious effort to stay away from the influences that had once held him back. He chose a quieter path focused on family, peace, and living each day with dignity.
Above all else, Floyd was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Joanne. He was kindhearted, supportive, and deeply committed to the people he loved. Though he had no biological children of his own, he embraced the role of grandfather and family patriarch to many who were blessed to know him. He loved spending time with family, sharing stories, listening to the classic R&B music he cherished.
One accomplishment that brought Floyd tremendous pride was helping prepare the writ of habeas corpus that contributed to the release of his brother, Vernon, from prison. It was an example of his determination, intelligence, and commitment to those he loved.
Today, our family is facing the unexpected challenge of arranging funeral services without the benefit of life insurance. We are asking friends, family members, former neighbors, and all whose lives were touched by Floyd to help us give him the dignified farewell he deserves.
Your contribution, regardless of amount, will help cover funeral and memorial expenses. Any remaining funds will be used to assist Joanne as she navigates this difficult transition.
If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please share this campaign and keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for helping us honor the life of Floyd "Stan" Johnson...
a mellow, cool soul who lived a hard life, rose above many challenges, and left this world a better man than the circumstances he was born into.
With gratitude,
The Johnson Family
