My MOTHER: Honoring the Life & Legacy of Janice Shalifoe
Donation protected
I’m heartbroken to share the passing of my mother, an extraordinary women: Janice Shalifoe. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, cousin and friend; a true pillar of her community. Her life story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering strength. Mama was born in a small community called: Beartown in upper Michigan. She was born in her small house. Her family grew and she was the 2nd born of 10 siblings. As the eldest daughter, she became my Gramma’s right hand at a young age, sharing in the household duties and helping raise the younger children. She endured hardship firsthand while growing up without electricity, running water and indoor plumbing. Mama faced life's many challenges with grit and determination.
Her journey of love began at a young age when she met her soulmate, my dad, Peter Halverson. Their love story was real and enduring—they started a family and built a life together. Tragically, they experienced unimaginable loss when a fire claimed the lives of three of their four children. I was the only survivor; also named Janice, after my mother. I was just a baby at the time, 11 months old. This devastating event left deep scars, but Mama’s resilience and strength never wavered. She later gave birth to my sister, Jean and my brother, Paul.
Mama was a woman of strength and independence. She dedicated her life to helping others, working as a social worker and Indian outreach worker across upper Michigan. Her kindness touched countless lives, especially within the Native American community. She was affectionately called “Gramma” by many. Throughout her life, Mama faced many losses—her children, her partner, and many loved ones—but she continued to give her heart to others, embodying compassion and love. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and the many lives she impacted. Mama’s favorite morning greeting was, "Rise and shine, it’s a beautiful day!” It will always make us smile and remind us of her positive spirit and love of life.
