Honoring the Life and Legacy of Carlos Mendoza

On January 7, 2026, Carlos Mendoza passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a community forever changed by his presence.
If you knew Carlos, you knew what it felt like when he walked into a room. There was an energy about him—warm, magnetic, impossible to ignore. His generosity was limitless and he had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and cared for, whether you'd known him your whole life or had just met him five minutes ago.

Carlos was a devoted husband to Leticia, a loving father to Mellisa, April, Robert, and Johnny, and a proud grandfather to Mathew, Mercer, Merit, Mila, and Catalina—with one more grandbaby expected in March. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, and a friend to so many. But more than any title, Carlos was a servant—to his family, his country, and his community.

A Life of Service

Carlos proudly served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. His service took him around the world—from the final years of the Vietnam War to East Germany and West Berlin during the Cold War, a special mission in Honduras, and finally to Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the First Persian Gulf War.

But his service to others didn't end when he left the military. Carlos was a proud Tejano from Eagle Pass, Texas, and his heritage and roots were immensely important to him. After retiring from the Army, he spent over a decade with the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC), eventually becoming President of the organization. Through TAMACC, Carlos became a champion for small Hispanic businesses at the local, state, and national levels—advocating for representation, opportunity, and the kind of support that helps families build something lasting.

Even after leaving TAMACC, Carlos never stopped supporting small businesses. He was a loyal, familiar face at countless local establishments—many of them Hispanic-owned—where owners and staff knew him by name. He always made it a point to connect with those around him, and those conversations lit a fire in him to blaze a trail to make life easier and more abundant for those who came next.

In the final years of his life, Carlos continued leading as Commander of Catholic War Veterans Post 1805 and a member of VFW Post 3377, advocating for veterans and opening his home to help them navigate benefits and feel supported. He was deeply involved with St. Paul Catholic Church's A.C.T.S., Parish Council, the Knights of Columbus, and many other ministries where his faith quietly guided the way he moved through the world.

For Carlos, service wasn't just something he did—it was who he was. And what made him so special wasn't just that he believed in helping others—it's that he showed up. Always.

The Man Behind the Uniform
Carlos loved working with his hands, researching new projects, dancing, and sports. But what he loved most was creating moments of joy for the people he cared about.

For over 25 years, Carlos kept a family tradition alive that became the highlight of every Christmas. He would dress up as Santa Claus, arrive with a giant bag of gifts, and call each person up one by one to receive their present. It wasn't about the gifts themselves—it was about the ritual, the individual attention, the look on each person's face. And true to form, Carlos always brought extra gifts, just in case someone unexpected showed up. Because in Carlos' world, there was always room for one more.

Even while hospitalized last summer and recovering from serious health challenges, Carlos was already planning how he could help others. He couldn't help it—Acts of Service was his love language. It was not uncommon for him to move heaven and earth just to make someone's day a little easier.

A Legacy of Love
Carlos leaves behind a family who will carry forward everything he taught them about love, generosity, and showing up for people. His four children and their spouses will honor his memory by living the way he lived. His grandchildren will grow up hearing stories about the grandfather who made everyone feel special. And his wife, Leticia, will continue to be surrounded by the community she and Carlos built with their own two hands.

While his passing was sudden and our family is still processing this loss, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Carlos was loved—and how much love he gave in return.
