In June 2024, we lost our beloved Karen Francazio Sanders to ALS. Even as her illness progressed painting remained a source of joy and continued to reflect her vibrant spirit and profound way of seeing the world.

Karen studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Philadelphia College of Art, where she honed her artistic vision. Her paintings represent a bridge between drawing and painting, created through rich textures, layering, mark making, and transparencies. Using watercolor, gouache, acrylic, acetate, plexiglass, and sometimes digital prints as a foundation, Karen’s work evokes an ethereal and subliminal sense of place.

We are organizing an exhibition of Karen’s paintings to celebrate her life and share her vision with the community. All proceeds from sales of her artwork will be donated to the ALS Association in her memory, supporting research and care for others affected by this devastating disease.

To make this possible, we are raising funds to cover the cost of renting a gallery space in downtown Asheville NC, where her work can be shown with the dignity and care it deserves. Any additional funds raised beyond the rental goal will go toward framing, archiving, and preserving her collection so her art can continue to inspire for years to come.

This exhibition is more than just a show—it is a tribute to Karen’s creativity and resilience. By contributing, you are helping us honor her legacy and extend her impact in the fight against ALS.
