My family and I experienced a loss we were not prepared to face. My father, Simon Perkins, passed away at the age of 67. Even as I write these words, it still doesn’t feel real. He was a man of strength, discipline, and great cultural pride—someone whose presence filled every room with quiet confidence and whose wisdom shaped the people around him in ways we are only beginning to understand.
My father lived his life with intention. He had a lifelong passion for martial arts, not just as a sport but as a philosophy. He believed in the discipline, the respect, and the inner balance it taught. Whether he was practicing forms in the backyard, watching classic martial arts films, or sharing lessons about patience and self‑control, he carried that spirit with him every day. To him, martial arts was a way of life—a reminder that strength is not only physical but also moral and spiritual.
He also held a deep love for African American culture, history, and expression. He celebrated it, studied it, and lived it with pride. He taught us to honor our roots, to understand the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us, and to walk through the world with dignity. He found joy in music, art, literature, and community traditions that reflected the richness of our heritage. Through him, we learned that culture is not just something you inherit—it’s something you carry forward.
Losing him so suddenly has left our family heartbroken and overwhelmed. Along with the emotional weight of this loss, we are now facing the unexpected financial burden of funeral and memorial expenses. My father deserved a service that reflects the love, respect, and legacy he leaves behind, but the costs are more than we can manage alone.
This GoFundMe is being created to help us give him the farewell he deserves.
Sincerely, Tyler Perkins and family
