Honoring Scott Garringer's Life

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SCOTT M. GARRINGER
JUNE 12, 1972 - JANUARY 10, 2025

The Scott Garringer Fund will support, in Scott's honor, the dedication of a memorial bench on the campus of his beloved alma mater, the University of Iowa, in Iowa City. His daughter, Megan, graduated from U. of IA in 2024 and Tabitha is currently a second year student there. As both girls are living in IA and their mom, Barbara, is living in CA, a memorial bench on the campus and funds to travel between IA and CA will help the Garringers both memorialize Scott and help the family as they navigate their road ahead.

Join us as we celebrate the life of Scott in a place he loved. To honor his memory, wear your black and gold Hawkeye gear or a shirt with a cheesy joke – just as he would have loved.

June 7, 2025 - Guests are welcome to drop in at any time between 1-5PM to share memories and celebrate together.

Scott Matthew Garringer, 52, passed away in his sleep on January 10, 2025 in the home he shared with his wife Barbara in Hermosa Beach, CA. He was born to John and Helen Garringer on June 12, 1972 in Iowa City, Iowa. Raised in VanHorne, IA with his older brother Shawn and younger sister Suzy, he did what most middle children do: became absolutely larger-than-life. He was always smart, always ambitious, always hilarious. Everyone knew him and most people loved him. He worked at his family’s small town grocery store for much of his childhood, and first found his love of cooking while working his way through high school in country clubs and hotels. In high school, he ran cross country, played golf, and largely warmed the bench in basketball. He graduated at the top of his class from Benton Community High School in 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa, followed by a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Scott met Barbara in 1995 and after a beautiful few years of travel, reading good books, cooking (on Scott’s part), and friendship, they were married on September 6th, 1998 in Rancho Palos Verdes. Their first-born daughter, Megan, was born in 2002 and their youngest, Tabitha, followed in 2005.

Scott’s career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney was accomplished and admirable. He served in many leadership roles for over 22 years, including as the Chief of the Criminal Division, Chief of the General Crimes Section, and Ethics Advisor. His colleagues at the U.S. Attorney’s Office honored him by renaming the office’s main meeting room the Garringer Conference Room.

Even more than being a prosecutor, Scott loved Iowa football, Cajun cuisine, Marvel movies, a well-made Godfather, and telling vibrant (and often exaggerated) stories. His beloved group of Sig Ep brothers can attest to his outgoing and sarcastic nature, and his unflappable strength. His colleagues often praise his integrity and ability to bring out the best in others. His family admired him greatly for his dedication and his passion, and for always finding room for a laugh. Somehow, he was both as nerdy as the Hawkeye sticker he wore on his glasses and as cool as the tailgates he held, where it wasn’t unusual to find a restaurant-quality, complicated dish and signature drink awaiting you.

Not a day will go by that he will not be missed by those who survive him: his wife, Barbara Garringer; his daughters, Megan and Tabitha Garringer; his parents, John and Helen Garringer; his sister, Suzy Pawlak; his brother, Shawn Garringer; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family; and many, many friends.
