In Loving Memory of Sahil Jilani - Supporting Our Family & Saving Lives Through Awareness

Dear Friends, Family, and Community,

It is with heavy hearts and profound

sorrow that we share the sudden, heartbreaking loss of our beloved brother, Sahil Jilani, and the hospitalization of our mother after learning she had lost her precious son, our little angel and most beautiful gift.

If you knew Sahil, you knew his pure, innocent soul. He was kind, thoughtful, generous, and always looking out for others.

Despite being so young, Sahil had a big heart and beautiful dreams for our family. He hoped to help our mother retire within a few years, take over financial responsibilities, and help our father with his dental procedures. Having recently become an uncle, he was beyond excited to spoil his little niece with gifts and teach her mixed martial arts and self-defense, sharing his passion for fitness.

He had so many plans to care for those he loved. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts.

Now, his sister Asma and brother-in-law Frank Bustamante will, Insha'Allah, fulfill his wishes and take on the responsibilities he had hoped to carry.

A Mother's Intuition, a Tragic Loss & a Mission to Save Lives

I am sharing Sahil's story to spread awareness and hopefully save lives. Although he was a very private person, I believe he would want his tragedy to protect others.

Never underestimate a parent's intuition. You know your loved ones best. Trust your instincts and act without delay.

On Monday, October 5, 2026, Sahil went missing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. That very day, my mother had an overwhelming feeling that something was terribly wrong.

It was completely unlike Sahil to go hours without checking in. His location sharing had stopped in an area without cellular service. Trusting our mother's intuition, we contacted park rangers the following day to request a welfare check.

We were advised to be patient, as hikers and campers frequently lose contact in areas without network coverage. But as the hours passed, our fear grew, and we continued requesting help. Sahil knew how much his silence and unavailable location would worry us.

Following an agonizing search lasting approximately 72 hours:

- October 7: Search teams located Sahil's car at the Abrams Falls parking lot. His phone, keys, and clothes were later recovered near the falls.

- October 8: Dive teams recovered Sahil's body from the waters at Abrams Falls.

While we await official reports, we believe Sahil tragically drowned after becoming caught in powerful hydraulic currents near the waterfall.

Waterfalls are breathtakingly beautiful, and many visitors naturally want to stand beneath them and feel the pressure of the falling water. What many don't realize Abrams Falls drops approximately 25 feet into a deep pool of water the hydraulic currents can pull a person underwater and trap them in recirculating water, making escape extremely difficult, even for experienced swimmers.

Being a strong swimmer does not make you immune to these dangers. What appears beautiful and peaceful can turn deadly in the blink of an eye.

Please take warning signs seriously, especially where lives have previously been lost. Share your travel plans, prepare for cellular dead zones, and consider carrying a satellite communication device when exploring remote areas.

AN UPSET OR DISAPPOINTED LOVED ONE WHO TURNS BACK FROM DANGEROUS WATER IS INFINITELY BETTER THAN A DECEASED ONE.

If Sahil's story saves even one life, perhaps another family can be spared this unimaginable pain.

How Your Generosity Will Help Our Family

Our family has always believed in sharing our blessings and helping others whenever possible. Today, we find ourselves in the difficult position of needing assistance.

I want to be transparent about what we know and the support we already have, even though our total expenses remain uncertain.

Our beloved Ismaili community has generously offered prayers, emotional support, and financial assistance, for which we are deeply grateful.

Despite Sahil being so young, my father followed a strong gut feeling and purchased funeral insurance for him for the first time this year. I truly believe God guided him toward that decision, as though his soul somehow knew how important it would become. This blessing may spare my husband and me from significant financial debt, although we are still learning about the policy's coverage and limitations.

Our mother remains hospitalized. Thankfully, she has medical insurance, but we do not yet know her deductibles, out-of-pocket expenses, or what her continued treatment may cost.

With the overwhelming responsibilities of bringing Sahil home from Tennessee to Houston and caring for our mother, we have not yet been able to calculate our total expenses.

- Medical and mental health care: Our mother's uncovered medical expenses and grief counseling for our family.

- Funeral and transportation: Bringing Sahil home and covering expenses not included in his funeral insurance.

- Our mother's future care and financial security: Frank and I plan to bring our mother into our home, surrounded by loved ones, especially her granddaughter. We intend to take full responsibility for her living expenses so she will no longer have to worry about bills or financial burdens.

- Loss of income and family support: Helping with essential household expenses while we care for our mother and adjust to these new responsibilities.

- Water safety awareness: Supporting our hope of educating others about dangerous waters, hydraulic currents, warning signs, and trusting parental intuition in Sahil's memory.

Sahil Has Given Me a New Purpose

As a former entertainment journalist and emcee, I was passionate about telling meaningful stories, making people feel special, spreading joy, and helping them forget their worries, even for a moment. Somewhere along the way, I lost that motivation and sense of purpose.

But through this heartbreaking tragedy, Sahil has given me a new purpose in life.

Once I have had time to grieve and care for my family, I will make it my MISSION to use my voice, experience, and storytelling to raise awareness and help prevent another family from experiencing this unbearable heartbreak.

I do not yet know what this awareness campaign will involve, what resources it will require, or how much of the funds raised I may be able to dedicate to it. My family's immediate needs must come first, but I am determined to honor Sahil's memory by saving lives.

If his story can save even one life, then his memory will continue to protect others.

Sahil was one of those special souls.

His loss has left a pain that words cannot describe. But I pray that through his story, countless lives may one day be saved.
