I am the daughter of Rosa Juarez, a metastatic breast cancer patient who is at end-of-stage care in the current moment. Around two years ago, my caring, Guatemalan immigrant mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 metastatic breast cancer. Around the end of summer of last year, her diagnosis changed to Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, where they found a brain tumor that was spread from the original cancer site. At that time last year, she spent weeks at the hospital receiving radiation therapy directly to her head to control her the growth of the malignant tumor in her brain. It worked for a while, but chemotherapy started once more, which she was receiving Enhertu. This chemotherapy can cross the blood-brain barrier, which impacted the tumor placement after months being on it, though it was working for her metastatic cancer. After it had affected the tumor, she was sent directly to the hospital where an emergency team was waiting on her to receive her in a bedroom to explain what her options would be. At that moment, she was given the option for surgery to help save herself from more brain inflammation, blurry vision, and viscous headaches that the tumor was causing. After her first brain surgery, her inflammation started to calm down and things were going well. Then, an unexpected brain bleed occurred where the site was operated on and a second surgery in the brain was needed to stop a potential permanent damage. Though, it didn’t stop there and two more brain bleeds occurred, at the point where it caused permanent paralysis to her left side of her body and permanent speech impairment. The doctors and my family decided to stop any surgeries because at this point, she was suffering and will continue to do so with her ongoing cancer progression. It has been a difficult decision for our family to take, but we stopped all aggressive care to prolong life and instead have been on comfort care to help her not feel pain or discomfort while her passing away progress happens. Having 1 surgery that opened the brain cavity is never an easy recovering, let alone 4 surgeries that my mother endured. My sister and father have both taken off work to be with my mother and have not been paid for the months without income, leading to an immense debt while dealing with the grieving process of losing the most caring mother and the perfect wife anyone could’ve had. She is leaving two daughters, age 20 and 24 and a husband, without a parental and emotional support figure in life to experience important events, which is the most difficult thing I’ve had to endure within my entire life. My mother’s dying wish was to be buried with my grandmother in Guatemala, where she lived the majority of her life. Though, sending her remains and burial abroad is extremely expensive and are asking for financial assistance in respecting my mother’s only request after she dies. Any help is greatly appreciated, and your support means everything to our struggling family.
