Garfield Langhorn, a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient and Riverhead resident, holds a unique place in Suffolk County Long Island’s history as its only Vietnam War Medal of Honor honoree. In 1969, when Garfield was laid to rest, Calverton National Cemetery had not yet been established. His family chose Riverhead Cemetery so his father could personally care for the plot, ensuring Garfield’s memory was honored in a deeply personal way. Garfield was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor at the White House by President Richard M. Nixon on April 7, 1970. However, due to the political climate and the anti-war movement at the time, Vietnam veterans often did not receive the recognition they deserved. Tragically, Garfield’s sacrifice and his Medal of Honor went largely unrecognized by the broader community.

After reaching out to the Langhorn family and relatives, I suggested that Garfield be reinterred at Calverton National Cemetery, where he would rest among fellow soldiers. The family agreed and asked me to lead this mission. Our intended date for the interment is late June or Early July 2026. The funds raised will cover all necessary arrangements for disinterment and reinterment, including cemetery fees, transportation, and ensuring Garfield receives the honor he deserves.

When the date is finalized, I plan to invite all contributors and community members to attend the interment and help give Garfield Langhorn the recognition befitting his supreme sacrifice.
