Saving a legacy, keeping our home.
Our beautiful, creative, strong, vibrant, sassy mama (Susan Kohl) left us on September 22nd at 4:08pm. She courageously battled a vicious disease for a very, very long time. If you knew our ma, she was a badass.
Our mom built her home in Taos, NM in 1984 when I (Marie) was 5. She has spent the years since curating an incredible garden, lush with greenery and rusty treasures and birds to her heart’s delight. She’s made the interior a reflection of her creativity and eye for beauty, everything meticulously crafted, placed and cared for. This is our home. Mia (my brilliant, adventurous, loving sister) was born here, took her first steps here, said her first words here, and buried her pets here over the years. I walked the foundation as it was being built, built forts in the vast open space around us and made lifelong friends in the neighborhood.
We celebrated incomparable Thanksgiving dinners, if you know you know. We learned art, aesthetic and countless creative talents from our mom and witnessed her boundless creativity from woodblock prints, to rusty bolos, to Christmas cookies and Ukrainian eggs. There wasn’t an art she couldn’t master. Yet, above all those things, she excelled the most at being a mom and a Suma to her beautiful children and grandchildren.
Mia and I have humbly created this gofundme in the hopes that we can pay off her mortgage and keep this home in our family. A home where her grandchildren can come and breathe the Taos air and honor her love of nature and adventure. Any remaining funds will be used to pay off remaining medical debt.
As per her wishes, there will be no memorial and nothing in the paper.
Feel free to reach out directly to me (Marie) if you’d like to share a memory of our mama.
