Our hearts are broken as we share the sudden and unexpected passing of our dear friend Mika.

Mika was born in Japan and brought light, laughter, and kindness wherever she went. She had this gentle way of making everyone feel seen, cared for, and loved. To know her was to feel her warmth — she was a devoted mother, loving sister, caring aunt, and loyal friend. Mika made the world a little brighter simply by existing in it.

She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Khadijah who was her pride and joy. Mika was a hard-working, single mother who raised her daughter with love, patience, courage and strength. Khadijah repaid that love by moving to Chicago and leveraging her organizational skills to help Mika grow her business. When Mika was experiencing challenges with her health, Khadijah was her fiercest advocate. It is impossible to put into words the loss her daughter now faces, and how deeply Mika will be missed by all who loved her.

Heartbreakingly, just a few days after Mika’s passing, her - and Khadijah’s - loyal canine companion of nearly 17 years, Moka, also passed away. Moka was always by their side. He was their shadow, their comfort, and an irreplaceable part of the family.  We find a small bit of peace knowing they are together again.

Now that Mika is gone, it feels like the house is too quiet. Every corner still feels like her — her favorite shawl, her tea mugs, the little notes she left. Losing her hasn’t just left Khadijah grieving; it’s left her trying to rebuild the rhythm of daily life without the person who was the center of it. Mika taught Khadijah how to work hard, love deeply, and keep going even when life feels impossible. She is trying to live that lesson now, one day at a time.

We come together to honor Mika’s memory and to support her daughter during this unimaginably difficult time. Financially, it’s been a lot to manage for Khadijah. Donations will help with immediate and costly funeral expenses and will ensure her daughter has the certainty and stability Mika would have wanted for her.
