Drake Borden and Kayleen Coggins’ lives were forever changed on November 21, 2025, with the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Livvy Rue. From the very beginning, Livvy was deeply loved and brought immeasurable joy to their lives.

Livvy was admitted into UAB Children's Hospital at the end of March due to feeding and breathing concerns noticed by her parents. Her condition quickly became a huge concern by the medical staff and genetic testing was completed to determine the cause of her issues. On April 6th, Livvy was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy with Respiratory Distress type 1 (SMARD1) and sadly passed April 10th.

SMARD1 is a rare and severe genetic condition that affects the nerves responsible for breathing and muscle movement. In Livvy’s case, it caused early diaphragm paralysis, making it incredibly difficult for her to breathe.  Despite everything, Livvy showed so much strength in her short life. We were told that her respiratory condition had progressed too far for her to safely undergo a tracheostomy (trach) or be supported long-term by a ventilator. This was devastating news, and we focused on surrounding her with love, comfort, and peace every moment we had.

Though her time here was far too short, Livvy will always be deeply loved and never forgotten. She brought so much light into our lives, and we will carry her with us forever.

Your life, though brief, was full of purpose and love. You touched our hearts in ways words will never fully explain, and we know we will see you again one day.
