Honoring Kevin Carter

On Sunday night, February 26th 2017, my brother came home from having dinner with our Mom and his youngest daughter and sat down on the couch to watch a movie. He quickly fell asleep and he never woke up again.

A couple weeks prior, he had been hospitalized for a serious infection in his blood stream and released against his wishes, too early with no antibiotics. Over the course of the next two weeks, he remained extremely ill, vomiting a lot and feeling weak. After dinner Sunday, he took his regular medications and sat down to watch a movie with our Mom. Due to the increasing weakness he was experiencing, the medications ended up knocking him out cold. Sometime during the evening, unbeknownst to anyone at home, Kevin began to vomit in his sleep and did not wake up while it was happening. He instead aspirated it into his lungs, which blocked his airway and prevented oxygen from reaching his brain. Several hours later, we discovered he was not just napping, but that something was very wrong.

We called an ambulance immediately and he was rushed to the emergency room. After doing some initial tests, it was discovered that this had likely done brain damage to him, but how much was still uncertain. Within the next 24 hours, we received the heartbreaking news that this had made him almost completely brain dead and that even if he did wake up, he would be in a vegetative state, unable to walk, talk, eat, or function in any way whatsoever. In short, we had already lost him and all that remained was his body, which was being kept alive by life support.

Over the next couple days, as all the tests came back with worse and worse results, our family decided to do what Kevin had expressed when he was alive and healthy, to let him go peacefully and not keep him in this world as just a shell of all that he used to be. Friday at 3pm, he was removed from life support and began the process to pass away under careful monitoring and comfort sedation to ensure he could not feel any pain nor be aware of anything happening to him.

Kevin is leaving behind two beautiful daughters: Olivia (age 17) and Gianna (age 7) as well as sisters and brothers Cherie, Cindy, Bobby, David and Brian, and parents Jim and Debbie. His parents have been hit with not only losing their youngest son, but the costs of cremation and a memorial service to allow the large group of friends and family to come together and celebrate his life. Never expecting this type of expense nor the need to plan for it, they simply can not afford it on top of caring for his youngest daughter full time now.

We are reaching out to the massive group of amazing people who's lives were touched by Kevin to help ease the financial burden and make it possible to honor him and his wishes. Any donations that are not spent for these things will go towards supporting his daughters. Anyone that's spent 5 minutes with Kevin knows he would gladly give you the shirt off his back. He was one of the most genuine and caring souls that's ever existed. He tried to help everyone, even if meant he had to go without. It is only because of how selflessly he lived his life that we are even able to justify asking for help right now.

Anything you can give would make such a difference and no amount is too small so please do not feel pressured into making large donations. With the amount of friends and family he leaves behind, a little bit from everyone would more than cover this. Prayers and positive vibes are also needed and appreciated more than we can put into words. The outpouring of love and support we have already received has been such a beautiful blessing and brought so many moments of comfort and peace within this whole tragedy. If you can, please help us share our story with your friends and contacts so that we may be able to succeed with our fundraising.
