It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Kelly Heinzel, a beloved son, friend, brother, grandson, and fighter, who left us far too soon.

Years ago, Kelly survived a horrific act of violence when he was shot in the face by someone he had met through a dating site. Despite the unimaginable trauma—and despite the lack of justice—Kelly chose to fight for his life. He endured countless surgeries and spent extended time in Salt Lake City under the care of some of the best doctors in the world. Through determination, resilience, and an unbreakable spirit, he survived.

Kelly faced many challenges along the way, including serious infections after the loss of an eye, which ultimately led to him receiving a prosthetic. Yet even through pain, setbacks, and long recoveries, Kelly never gave up. He continued to push forward, rebuild, and thrive. He met every obstacle with courage and strength that inspired everyone who knew him.

This morning, Kelly passed away suddenly, with a suspected heart attack. Even in his final moments, he fought to live. His last words to his mother were, “I don’t want to die.” Those words reflect who Kelly was—a fighter to the very end.

Kelly was born in 1985 and lived a life marked not by what tried to break him, but by how fiercely he refused to be broken. He leaves behind a grieving family, friends who loved him deeply, and a legacy of resilience, bravery, and heart.
