My only sister, Katrin Paikar, was the heart of our family and such a bright light in our community. She lived her life with so much compassion, always reaching out to anyone who needed a listening ear or a helping hand. Katrin truly believed her purpose was to lift people up, and she did that every single day with kindness and grace. She had this incredible emotional intelligence that allowed her to connect deeply with people, and her advice and support meant more than she probably ever realized.
When I was 19 and just starting college, I fell in love with a little Maltese puppy — but I couldn’t afford it. Without even thinking twice, Katrin stepped in and bought the puppy for me. She told me to keep my money and use it for school supplies instead. That was just who she was. She always put others first and wanted to make sure I had what I needed to succeed. That small act of love meant the world to me, and it’s something I’ll never forget.
She also had this beautiful way of connecting with complete strangers. It didn’t matter where we were — the grocery store, a coffee shop, anywhere — she would start a conversation and genuinely care about the person in front of her. She didn’t just make small talk. She truly wanted to know how they were doing. I watched her comfort and encourage people she had just met, treating them like old friends. She made people feel seen, heard, and valued in a way that was so rare and special.
Our lives changed forever when Katrin tragically passed away in a fire. The suddenness of it has left us heartbroken and struggling to process such an unimaginable loss.
Losing Katrin has left such a huge emptiness in our lives. My mom and I feel her absence every single day, and the community she loved so much is grieving right alongside us. The love and memories people have shared have been both heartbreaking and comforting. It’s a reminder of just how many lives she touched.
We are raising funds to help cover Katrin’s funeral expenses and to honor her in a way that reflects the love and generosity she gave so freely. Any support, no matter the amount, means more to us than we can say. It will help us give her the farewell she deserves and remind us that we’re not alone in this grief.
Thank you for standing with us during this incredibly difficult time. It truly means everything.
