Kathey’s legacy in Lima is one of dedication, vision, and community spirit. In 1998, she made history as the first African American woman appointed Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Lima under Mayor David J. Berger. Overseeing 11 parks and 283 acres, Kathey poured her heart into every green space, ensuring that each park was a place where families could gather, children could play, and neighbors could connect.
Among her many achievements, Kathey’s work to secure Juneteenth as an official city holiday stands out as a testament to her commitment to inclusion and celebration of heritage. She led the committee that made this important milestone possible, creating a tradition that brings the community together each year to honor freedom and unity.
Kathey leaves to cherish her memory her two sons, Dion R. Johnson of Harlem, New York, and Katone T. Roberts of Columbus, Ohio. Kathey will be remembered for her trailblazing accomplishments, her vibrant sense of humor, and her unwavering commitment to helping others grow and succeed. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
This memorial fund is dedicated to supporting the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Kathey’s honor. Your contribution will help continue the event she cared so deeply about, ensuring her legacy lives on in the parks and celebrations she loved. Please join us in remembering Kathey and supporting a cause that meant so much to her and to our community.
