My son, Joshua, was a bright light in this world—my light—and losing him has left a pain I cannot begin to describe. He was a go-getter, a driven young man who never let life’s disadvantages or setbacks define him. Instead, he rose above them with strength, determination, and a heart that always wanted to help others.

Joshua was deeply involved in school and community life. He gave his time and energy to chess, served as treasurer, and later became president of JSA, the Junior State of America, where he developed his leadership skills and passion for debate, civic engagement, and service. Because of his drive and involvement, he was invited to many incredible opportunities, including trips to Boston and even the White House. He was also offered scholarships to many Ivy League schools, but he chose Columbia University in New York, where he was just one month away from graduating with a bachelor’s degree in visual arts and sociology.

He graduated as Valedictorian of Kofa High School, a reflection of his hard work, resilience, and commitment to excellence. More than his accomplishments, Joshua was kind, thoughtful, and full of purpose. He had a passion for helping others, and he carried that compassion into everything he did.

As his mother, I am devastated by the loss of my son, but I am also incredibly proud of the young man he became. We are seeking support to help cover funeral and memorial expenses during this heartbreaking time. Any additional funds raised beyond those costs will go toward creating a scholarship in Joshua’s name, so his legacy of leadership, kindness, and perseverance can continue to help other students for years to come.
