I was sitting in a parking lot when the message came through on my phone, a group chat, just me and 3 other parents, a chat only really used for birthdays and school events.

"My husband passed away last night," from a number I didn't recognize. It took me a moment to realize a friend of mine had passed away and nothing else seemed to matter in that moment.

I am probably not the person anyone expects to be organizing this fundraiser, but for the past 4 days, since I received that message, I haven't stopped thinking about the Garcia family.

Honestly, as I write this, I realize that I didn't know a lot about Jose. I have only known Jose for about 4 years, since our boys started playing clarinet together in the middle school band. Though when I think of Jose, I think of his warm, unforgettable smile, a smile that always made you feel noticed. He was the kind of person who was a friend to everyone. A guy who would walk across the room to say hi, instead of just waving. Jose organized birthday parties for the kids, and you could just tell he loved bringing everyone together.

Jose was a great dad, husband, brother, son, and friend. I didn't have to know anything about Jose to see how much family meant to him. He always showed up for Joshua and Amyee; every band or school event, Jose was there.

Last year, he told me something that stuck with me. We were having a discussion about the boys entering high school and the classes they should take. Jose said something like, "I trust Joshua to know what's best for him." It was inspiring to see not only the love and support he had for his kids, but his confidence and faith in them. Another time, I can remember running late for a band event, only to find out that Jose saved a seat up front for us next to his family.

In the end, life doesn't amount to how much money you have, how big your house is, or how nice your car is, though Jose had an appreciation for nice cars. Life is about the difference you make in the lives of others and how you make them feel. Jose always made the people around him feel welcome.

I organized this fundraiser to follow in Jose's example and be there for people when they need you most. So let us carry on his legacy of kindness and love. Let us show up for Rocio, Joshua, and Amyee like Jose always did.

After Jose's unexpected passing at just 46, they must find a way to continue on, to simply wake up each day and breathe. Let's make life possible for them without their husband, without their dad.

Estaba sentado en un estacionamiento cuando el mensaje llegó a mi teléfono, un chat grupal, solo yo y otros 3 padres, un chat que en realidad solo se usaba para cumpleaños y eventos escolares.

"Mi esposo falleció anoche", desde un número que no reconocí. Me tomó un momento darme cuenta de que un amigo mío había fallecido y nada más parecía importar en ese momento.

Probablemente no soy la persona que nadie esperaría que estuviera organizando esta recaudación de fondos, pero durante los últimos 4 días, desde que recibí ese mensaje, no he dejado de pensar en la familia García.

Sinceramente, mientras escribo esto, me doy cuenta de que no sabía mucho sobre José. Solo conocí a José hace unos 4 años, desde que nuestros hijos comenzaron a tocar el clarinete juntos en la banda de la escuela secundaria. Sin embargo, cuando pienso en José, pienso en su sonrisa cálida e inolvidable, una sonrisa que siempre te hacía sentir visto. Era el tipo de persona que era amigo de todos. Un hombre que cruzaba la habitación para saludarte en lugar de simplemente hacerte un gesto con la mano. José organizaba fiestas de cumpleaños para los niños, y se notaba que le encantaba reunir a todos.

José fue un gran padre, esposo, hermano, hijo y amigo. No necesitaba saber nada más sobre José para darme cuenta de cuánto significaba la familia para él. Siempre estaba presente para Joshua y Amyee; en cada evento de la banda o de la escuela, José estaba allí.

El año pasado me dijo algo que se me quedó grabado. Estábamos hablando sobre el ingreso de los chicos a la preparatoria y las clases que debían tomar. José dijo algo como: “Confío en que Joshua sabe qué es lo mejor para él”. Fue inspirador ver no solo el amor y el apoyo que tenía para sus hijos, sino también la confianza y la fe que depositaba en ellos. En otra ocasión, recuerdo haber llegado tarde a un evento de la banda, solo para descubrir que José nos había guardado asientos en primera fila junto a su familia.

Al final, la vida no se mide por cuánto dinero tienes, qué tan grande es tu casa o qué tan bonito es tu automóvil, aunque José apreciaba los buenos autos. La vida se trata de la diferencia que haces en la vida de los demás y de cómo los haces sentir. José siempre hacía que las personas a su alrededor se sintieran bienvenidas.

Organicé esta recaudación de fondos para seguir el ejemplo de José y estar presente para las personas cuando más te necesitan. Así que continuemos con su legado de bondad y amor. Acompañemos a Rocío, Joshua y Amyee como José siempre lo hizo.

Después del inesperado fallecimiento de José a los apenas 46 años, ellos deben encontrar la manera de seguir adelante, de simplemente despertarse cada día y respirar. Hagamos que la vida sea un poco más posible para ellos sin su esposo, sin su papá.
