My dad left this world the same way he lived in it; unexpectedly and surrounded by love.
On the morning of March 25th, he suffered a heart attack in his sleep. His wife Dana, my sister Erin, and my nephew Giovanni did everything they possibly could, performing CPR while my youngest brother Henry called 911 and the paramedics arrived and took over. He was taken to the hospital where life-saving measures continued, but on the evening of March 26th, he passed.
He was surrounded by a room full of his loved ones, while we played his favorite tunes and helped usher him into his next chapter with so much love.
There are no words that fully capture a loss like this. My dad was life in motion. Always the life of the party, the musical backdrop to every family BBQ, always joking, always having fun, always planning the next adventure.
Adventures so big and precarious that they later deemed the term “extreme Callahan vacationing”. The kind of trips that felt bigger than life and somehow became even bigger in the stories we’d tell after.
He didn’t just live, he experienced life FULLY. And he made everyone around him feel like they were part of something special.
Since his passing, we’ve been met with such an outpouring of love. So many people asking how they can help, how they can show up for him and for us. It means more than we can express.
Right now, the biggest way you can support our family is by helping us give him the send-off he truly deserves.
We are planning a Celebration of Life here in San Diego on April 21st, where we’ll come together to honor him the way he would’ve loved; with music, stories, and a whole lot of heart. More details on time and location to come.
His funeral service will be held on April 22nd at 11AM at El Camino Memorial (Sorrento Valley & Memorial Park). He will be buried in good company, right next to his father.
If you feel called to contribute, any amount helps and is deeply appreciated. And if you’re not in a place to give, no worries at all.
Thank you for loving him with us
