Honoring John Brand II: A Family's Loss

Donation protected
John Wesley Brand II, born on February 28, 1956, in Brooklyn, departed this life on August 4, 2024, in Columbia. He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, leaving behind cherished memories for his family and community.

John, affectionately known as Jypsy Dad or simply Wesley, was a passionate ASL teacher and counselor, dedicating his life to empowering others through education and support. He was the youngest and prominent president of Alpha Sigma Pi at Gallaudet University, where he demonstrated remarkable leadership and commitment to his fraternity. John was also a co-founder of the Chicagoland Black Deaf Advocates, a testament to his dedication to advocating for the Deaf community.

His love for photography and writing allowed him to capture the beauty of life, and he often found joy in watching NCAA football and rugby. John was a source of inspiration to many, often sharing his journey of recovery at NA meetings and motivating others to persevere.

He is survived by his son, John Brand III; his daughter, Cookie J. Brand; and two granddaughters, who brought him immense joy. His younger brothers, Christopher and Lester, along with several nieces and nephews, will also carry on his legacy.

John's life motto, "And Life Goes On," reflects his resilient spirit and unwavering positivity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Please support our family as we plan for the Celebration of Life and related expenses. Any donation you make would be greatly appreciated.

The John Brand II Celebration of Life will take place in February 2025 in Chicago. Meanwhile, view the memorial page at:
