In Loving Memory of Joe Burton
January 23, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Joe Burton, at the age of 40, on January 23, 2025, surrounded by Sister Jenny and Partner Nichole.

Joe was a man of many facets—affectionate, strong-willed, and undeniably loyal. Known to many as a “big giant teddy bear” with a sharp edge, Joe's authenticity made him unforgettable. He lived his life full of passion, humor, and a fierce love for those around him.

Joe was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, but called Alberta home since he was seven. His pride for his roots ran deep, and no matter where life took him, he always carried with him the values of family, friendship, and hard work. As a crane operator and a proud member of Operating Engineers Local 955 since 2001, Joe was well-respected in his field and known for his dedication to his craft.

To those who knew him, Joe was a beloved son, brother, and partner. His pride and joy came from being a father to his daughter and son. Road trips with his daughter, especially to the Zoo’s and Drumheller. Watching his son play minor hockey was one of his greatest joys as well as trying to out game both his kids, although that would never happen. Joe’s love for the outdoors, spending time at the cabin, where he could unwind and enjoy the company of his loved ones, his two dogs Dax and Winston (who often out-snores him), and the peace of nature, and making memories with family and friends filled his life with purpose and happiness. He was the kind of man who would always make time for those he loved, whether it was cheering on his son at a game or taking care of his baby sister, despite the teasing he often dished out.

Joe’s sense of humor was as big as his heart, and he was known for his loyalty to his friends, family, and community. His first job at McDonald’s might have been a humble start, but it’s where he first made his mark with a memorable instruction to his Mom to avoid visiting him there after his co-workers started commenting on how “hot” she was. Joe never hesitated to speak his mind and could always make those around him laugh, even if it was at his own expense.

He is survived by his parents, Janice Burton and Barry Budden, Dave and Sharyn Burton, his siblings, Jenny, Oliva and Julian. He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Sadie Devos Burton, partner, Nichole Dunlop, her son Kaelen, his nephews and nieces, Brayden, Charlie, Zoey, and Ryleigh. His Mother-in-law, Dee Wilkinson, and Father-in-law, Nathan Dunlop. As well as countless friends, extended family, and colleagues who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Joe’s presence in this world will be sorely missed, but his legacy lives on in the love he shared, the lessons he taught, and the joy he brought to everyone lucky enough to know him. May we all find comfort in knowing that Joe's spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he loved.

If you able, please donate anything you can. Any money raised above and beyond will be given to Joe's partner, Nichole, so she doesn't have to worry about day-to-day expenses as she learns to navigate towards living life with out Joe.

We appreciate your time and thoughts.
Date of Funeral will be posted shortly.
